How to Install Fence Posts in a Pickleball or Tennis Court: The Right Order of Operations
If you’re planning a new pickleball court or tennis court, planning for how your posts and net will be installed is an important part of the build process.
It sounds like a small detail, but getting the sequence wrong can mean a leaning fence, a cracked slab, or expensive rework. Here’s the correct way to think about installing your net and post footings.
Can You Just Pour the Court and Drill the Fence Post Holes Later?
This is the most common instinct, and ideally you’d avoid this when building a new court. The idea is simple: pour the whole flat court surface first, let it harden, then drill holes into it afterward for the fence posts. Drilling clean holes through hardened concrete is called core-drilling.
The problem is depth. A pickleball or tennis court slab is only about 4-6 inches thick. Core-drilling through it only gets you four inches down…nowhere near deep enough to anchor a fence post that has to stand up to wind for decades. A post set that shallow will lean and wobble over time, and the drilling itself can crack your brand-new slab.
Core-drilling has its place for small, light-duty items. For a real perimeter fence or a center divider, it’s not the recommended approach.
So the short answer to “should we pour everything and drill after the fact?” is no.
What’s the Difference Between a Footing and a Sleeve?
Two terms are thrown around a lot in the fencing world: Footings and Sleeves.
A footing (sometimes called a pier) is a column of concrete poured into a deep hole in the ground. It’s the anchor that holds a fence post upright and steady. Think of the difference between a garden stake you push in by hand and a mailbox post you set in concrete — the footing is what makes the post permanent.
A sleeve is a hollow metal tube set into the top of that footing while the concrete is still wet. Instead of putting the actual post in early, you set the sleeve, and later you drop the post down into it. It’s like an umbrella dropping into an umbrella stand. The top of the sleeve sits flush (perfectly level) with the finished court surface, so it stays out of the way while the flat slab is being poured and smoothed.
Sleeves are the trick that lets you get deep, solid anchors and a perfectly flat court at the same time.
Why Do Court Fence Posts Need Footings Below the Frost Line?
In Nebraska, Iowa, and anywhere with real winters, the ground freezes. When wet soil freezes, it expands and pushes upward, a process called frost heave. If a fence footing doesn’t go deep enough, that yearly freezing and thawing will gradually shove the post up and out of alignment.
The fix is to pour each footing down below the depth where the ground freezes, known as the frost line. In much of southwest Iowa and eastern Nebraska that’s roughly 42 inches down, but the exact required depth is set by your local building authority, so always confirm it for your specific site before you dig.
What’s the Recommended Order of Operations for Court Fence Posts?
Here’s the full sequence we recommend, start to finish. The key idea: pour the footings with sleeves first, then the flat slab, then drop the posts in at the very end.
- Lock in the layout. Mark the exact center line of the court and the precise location of every fence post, including any center divider. Once the footings are in the ground, you can’t move them so it’s important you get this right.
- Prepare and compact the base. The gravel and soil beneath the slab must be leveled and packed down firm so nothing settles or shifts later.
- Dig and pour the footings (before the slab). At each post location, auger a deep hole below the frost line and fill it with concrete. This creates the permanent anchor for each post. This happens before the flat court surface goes in.
- Set a sleeve in the top of each footing. As each footing is poured, place a galvanized metal sleeve in the wet concrete at the top, with its opening set level with where the finished court surface will be. Sleeves now, posts later.
- Pour and screed the court slab in one continuous pass. Now pour the large flat court surface. Screeding means dragging a long straight edge across the wet concrete to level it and knock down high spots. Think of it like leveling flour in a measuring cup. Because only the flush sleeve openings are poking up (not whole posts), the crew can screed the slab perfectly flat without obstacles. A flat surface is essential for true ball bounce and safe footing.
- Isolate each sleeve from the slab. Leave a small separation around each sleeve so the slab can expand and contract on its own. Concrete naturally moves with temperature, and this detail keeps the fence from telegraphing a crack out from every post.
- Cure, then surface. Curing is simply letting the concrete harden and gain strength over time. Once it’s cured, the acrylic color coating and line striping (the surfacing) go on.
- Set the posts and grout them in. Slide each post into its sleeve, plumb it perfectly straight, and lock it in place with non-shrink grout- a cement-like filler that won’t shrink away and leave the post loose. Then hang your fence or divider.
Why Not Just Set the Posts Directly in the Wet Concrete?
There’s a middle option some crews use: set the actual fence posts into the slab while the concrete is still wet, during the pour. It anchors the posts, but it creates a real headache. A fresh slab has to be made dead flat, and having full-height posts sticking up all over the pour makes screeding much harder.
You end up fighting the posts instead of finishing the surface. Setting sleeves flush instead of full posts sidesteps that entirely.
How Deep and Wide Should the Fence Footings Be?
There’s no single answer, because two things drive the size of the footing:
- Fence height. A tall perimeter fence puts far more leverage on each footing than a low divider, so it needs a bigger, deeper anchor.
- Windscreen. A windscreen is a fabric cover attached to the fence to block wind and reduce distraction during play. It also turns the fence into a sail- it catches a lot of wind load. So a fenced court with windscreen needs noticeably beefier footings than a bare fence of the same height.
Because of this, footing diameter and depth should be sized to your specific fence height, whether you’re adding windscreen, and your local frost depth. When in doubt, have it engineered rather than guessed.
The Bottom Line
For a permanent pickleball or tennis court fence (perimeter or center divider) don’t pour the slab and drill afterward, and don’t wrestle full posts into the wet pour either. Pour the footings with flush sleeves first, then screed a clean flat slab, then drop the posts into the sleeves and grout them at the end.
This is how you achieve a get deep, frost-proof anchors and a flat, true playing surface.
